Spanking in Schools
I have a good friend that is trying to get the law changed here in Texas to make corporal punishment in schools illegal.
Did you know that it’s still legal in 21 states? Did you know that over 220.000 kids were spanked in school during the 2006-2007 school year? Did you know that 17% of students are black, yet they made up 35% of those paddled in school? Did you know that black girls were paddled at twice the rate of white girls? And that black students are 1.4 times more likely to get paddled?
This is a problem.
No matter how you feel about spanking in your own home, kids should not be paddled in school. Period.
What defines a “spankable” offense? One child was paddled for flicking a rubber band. After his mother wrote a letter asking that he not be psychically punished. The school lost the letter.
Cities can (and do) outlaw this. But not enough.
Parents can opt out of this, so many choose not to get involved in things like this. But this doesn’t always work. As long as it’s allowed, it’s going to happen.
Let’s stop this.
Here’s a CNN article.
Here’s a list where this is legal and used.

If you’re in one of the states that it’s still legal, I urge you to make your voice heard.
